The Leybourn Family & Accounting

In the 1910 census at age 22, Arthur “Art” Samuel Leybourn was listed as a Bookkeeper in the Stock trade industry, beginning a legacy of family bookkeepers and certified public accountants spanning 5 generations and nearly 110 years.

Art probably gleaned knowledge from the family fruit and dairy business, but with several partners would incorporate the Shippers’ Commission Company (1915), the Toledo Safety Device Company (1928), and the Columbus Radio Company (1929).  He served as Secretary-Treasurer of those companies and at the Art Gravure Company (Cleveland).

Art’s sister, Hessie Winifred Leybourn, was first a teacher, then a stenographer in the real estate industry before becoming a bookkeeper.

Art’s first son, Leslie Chester Leybourn, was an accountant at a Toledo auto factory, and second son, Charles Wilson Leybourn, was Bookkeeper for a gift store by 1930.  Charles worked as Chief Clerk for Gulf OiI and was appointed by Ohio Governor Jim Rhodes to the State Accountancy Board.  He served as President of the Toledo chapter, and President and Board member, of the Public Accountants Society of Ohio.

Brothers Leslie and Charles founded Leybourn and Leybourn, Public Accountants, in Toledo around 1950.

With the addition of Charles’s daughter, Joanne Sue Dickson, Charles and Leslie's nephew, Ronald Johnson, as well as Richard Pieper and Louie Shrode as partners, the Leybourn accountancy firm changed names many times until 1996.  At that time, Richard Pieper succeeded as the last remaining partner of the firm, Richard Pieper and Associates, CPA.

However, Joanne’s daughter, Bonnie Sue Dickson Huff, previously an associate in the firm founded by her grandfather and great uncle, is Director of Accounting for Marco’s Pizza (Toledo).  Joanne’s grandson, Brent Lucas Dickson, was a Bookkeeper at Beacon Property Management and Realty (Columbus, Ohio).
